25 May What is the role of an Oral Health Therapist?
To provide you with the very best dental care and experience, Brisbane Smiles provides a team of Oral Health Therapists. Their purpose is to ensure that you are getting the very best dental cleans, dental hygiene advice and children’s dental therapy.
What’s an Oral Health Therapist (OHT)?
To become an Oral Health Therapist, you must have completed a3-year university degree and be registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Association (AHPRA).
OHTs are dual trained in both dental therapy and dental hygiene and provide a wide range of dental care on both children, adolescents, and adults.
An OHT is responsible for looking after the health of your mouth, making sure your teeth are clean and ensuring you are receiving the right personalised oral health advice that is suitable for you.
Oral Health Therapists are qualified to complete dental check-ups and dental therapy on children under the age of 18 years.
An OHTs role within Brisbane Smiles:
• Children’s routine dental examinations, dental treatment, and preventative therapy
• Taking dental X-rays, 3D Dental Scans and photographs
• Adult & Children Dental Cleans
• Maintaining gum health, as well as treating and stabilising those suffering from gum disease
• Oral Health promotion and personalised Oral Health advice
• Teeth Whitening Advice & Teeth Whitening Treatment
Why should I see an OHT?
Teeth and gums that are healthy and clean have a lower risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease and tooth problems can be painful, can become expensive if left unattended and can create unwanted interruptions to your daily life. Your ability to prevent such problems relies on your oral health and regular trips to an OHT. Your OHT at Brisbane Smiles is experienced and has the skills necessary to help you achieve your best and healthiest smile.
How does my Dentist and OHT work together?
At Brisbane Smiles our Dentists and OHTs work together to ensure that your dental appointment is thorough, yet gentle. The OHT will clean your teeth by removing any tartar and plaque build-up. They check your gums for gingivitis and other oral diseases, educate you on your at-home oral care routines and plan and discuss any recommended future appointments. The Dentist will review any X-rays, dental scans and photographs taken by the OHT and they will examine all your teeth and surrounding soft tissue. OHTs provide complete care for children and adolescents: Performing the dental exam and clean and reporting to the Dentist. OHTs can both diagnose and perform children’s dental fillings, fissure sealants and tooth extractions(baby teeth).
At Brisbane Smiles, by providing both General Dentists and Oral Health Therapists we are committing to ensuring you and your families dental care is the very best standard and comfort.
