Managing Cosmetic Dentistry Risks & Complications

Cosmetic Dental Procedures often go hand in hand with returning appropriate health and function to an unhealthy mouth, teeth, gums and bite scheme. Complications that may arise following your Cosmetic Dental treatment:
► General Complications such as swelling, tiredness, discomfort are normal to experience after all dental procedures which involve prolonged periods of dental anaesthetics.

► Tooth Complications such as increased sensitivity (usually temporary, but if permanent may require Root Canal Treatments), toothache, tooth cracking, tooth chipping. Teeth whitening and bonding will discolour with time varying depending on diet and habits such as smoking.

► Porcelain Complications such as chips, varied colour depending on artificial lighting such as fluorescent and Ultra-Violet lights. Chips and porcelain fracture will require replacement of individual crowns.

► Gum Complications such as redness, recession, infection, and these complications are usually corrected with further treatments such as cleaning and revision surgery

► Bite Complications such as uneven bite, jaw discomfort, jaw tiredness, jaw clicking, and these complications are usually treated with refinement of your bite and wearing a protective night-time guard.

► Cosmetic Complications such as noticeable changes to you appearance, your family and friends will notice changes and improvements. Changes to shapes must be made during the provisional teeth (temporary teeth) stage, as the final porcelain teeth can only accept very minor changes, with no adjustment to colour possible. Remaking porcelain crowns and veneers for cosmetic enhancement are at the expense of the patient.

►Other Complications such as speech pronounciation changes which settle usually during the first 48 hours, but can on occassions require alteration to the shape of your new teeth. In addition, the temporary and new teeth feel foreign and ‘aware’ for a period of time before they begin to feel more natural.

► Surgical Complications (where relevant) such as bleeding, infection and nerve damage causing temporary or permanent numbness to your lip.

THE ALTERNATIVES TO COSMETIC DENTAL TREATMENT ARE:
1. To not have any treatment.
2. To seek a second opinion.
3. Other treatments/combinations of treatments.
4. Preventive Treatments such as night-guards and Orthodontics to help prevent further breakdown

FOR LONG-TERM SUCCESS OF COSMETIC DENTAL TREATMENT YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Follow all instructions for home care and appropriate diet
2. Appear for periodic examinations as advised by your dentist. There is an additional fee for this service.
3. Exercise care in not abusing your teeth.
4. Appear for periodic cleaning of your teeth and gums as advised by your Dentist and Dental Hygienist.
5. Advise your dentist immediately if any problems are noticed.
