The Experience
Your experience is that you are awake and able to interact with our staff, with your fears and anxiety removed leaving you with little memory of any of the dental treatment. This is a great advancement in Dental Care and is suitable for medically fit – adult patients with a need invasive procedures or who simply just nervous about their needed dental procedures.

It allows our Dental Team to perform large amounts of treatment at the one time, or perform procedures that would otherwise require the extra expenses of going to Hospital. A Qualified Medical Anaesthetist will provide the Sedation through an Intravenous Drip.
You will need to have someone collect you and take you home following the procedure as you will remain relaxed for most of the day. Six hours prior to your appointment you should not eat or smoke. You need to advise if there are any changes to your medical history that we are unaware of.

Brisbane Smiles is equipped with all of the latest Sedation equipment including Vital Signs Monitor with all Resuscitation Equipment and Automated Electronic Defibrillators for Medical Emergencies. All IV Sedation is performed by a qualified Medical Specialist Anaesthetist.

Sedation Suitability
Intravenous Sedation is suitable for adults who are medically fit. The Medical Anaesthetist will complete pre-appointment checks for your medical suitability and your pre-appointment Consultation will confirm suitability to proceed. If at any time the Medical Anaesthetist is concerned for your medical safety, treatment will cease and on-referral to a hospital-setting arranged for your safety.

Sedation Appointments
Your Sedation Appointment will commence with a Consultation with the Medical Anaesthetist. Following your Consultation, you will be taken into the Treatment Room for preparation and treatment will commence after you are all ready, sedated and relaxed.
Prior to your Sedation Appointment you need to take your regular medications, bring those medications to your Appointment, or otherwise bring a thorough list of all medications.
You should eat nothing, only taking a sip of water to assist with taking any medications for up to 6 hours prior. You should not smoke on the day of the appointment.
During the Sedation Appointment
While you will be relaxed by the Sedation, you are still conscious and able to communicate with your Dentist and the Medical Anaesthetist. You will have Local Anaesthetics to ensure teeth are numb and remove any discomfort in this regard. You will be able to communicate and your Medical Anaesthetist will ensure you are given sufficient sedation medications to ensure a pleasant experience. You will typically experience little discomfort, and often have very little memory of the appointment.
After Sedation Appointments
The effects of Sedation will mean you feel lethargic and tired throughout the rest of the day. For this reason you need to be monitored by a trusted carer and you are unable to work, drive and make important decisions for the remainder of the day/night. You will be given prescriptions for medications to assist with post-operative pain management. Your carers/family member will need to collect and take you home from your appointment.
IV Sedation Alternatives
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide is often known as Happy Gas. Though you are still awake, the Nitrous Oxide is inhaled through your nose and will assist you to become relaxed. This treatment is quick acting within minutes and will wear off quickly after the appointment.
Oral Tablets
Oral Sedation using tablets can greatly assist in managing anxiety and fear of dental treatment. Tablets will take effect within an hour and last for 6-8 hours. Oral Sedation is good for patients with mild anxiety levels and need basic non-invasive procedures.
Local Anaesthetic
There are times where Dental Procedures are less involved than you first might find. In fact, our patients often find after meeting their Dentist they feel more relaxed and are able to tolerate the painless treatment with simply Local Anaesthetic. Local Anaesthetic is an injection adjacent to the tooth being treated and will ensure you do not feel any pain or discomfort throughout the appointment.
