Whether you are happy to come to the dentist or whether you are an anxious and nervous patient your dentist can help you. For our anxious patients who aren’t so confident in the dental chair we offer three levels of sedation to help you feel comfortable and at ease during your dental appointments.
- Happy Gas – Nitrous Oxide
- Oral Sedation – Tablets
- Intravenous Sedation with Medical Anaesthetist
Our first point of call is nitrous oxide (happy gas), which is directly plumbed into our surgeries and can be requested at time of booking your appointment. Our Dentists are experienced and confident in using nitrous oxide and are able to help you feel comfortable and at ease during your appointment.
Nitrous Oxide – or simply known as Laughing Gas is a mixture of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen. You simply breathe in the gas through a tube that attaches to your nose which in turn allows you to relax during your dental appointment. You cannot overdoes on happy gas, as it is a safe mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen mixed together.
Happy gas can be used on adults and children during their Brisbane dental appointments at Brisbane Smiles. You do remain conscious at all times during your appointment, but your dental treatments do not cause you any discomfort during your procedures. There are no side-effects for happy gas, you just feel a little drowsy at the time and you can drive a car home about 15 minutes after treatment. Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas is very safe and the most common sedation method used in dentistry.
Sometimes you just feel al ittle anxious about having a procedure and might not sleep well the night before. In these instances you may discuss oral sedation with tablets. You would take these tablets typically the night before and then 1 hour before your appointment.
