Common Dental Problems

Some people are too embarrassed to get their teeth checked if there is a problem. However, the truth is that almost any oral health problem you may have has been seen by the dentist hundreds of times before. Below are five of the most common dental problems dentists see in their clinics.

1. Tooth decay and erosion
Tooth decay is one of the most common disorders in the world. Caused by plaque mixing with sugar or starch, which produces an acid that attacks the tooth enamel, tooth decay can eat away at the tooth, eventually causing erosion. Both of these problems can be prevented with a healthy diet and good oral health routine.

2. Gum disease
Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is an infection of the gums that surround your teeth. This usually occurs when good oral health is neglected. It is important you brush and floss daily, as well as having regular dental check-ups to catch any problems before they progress too far.

3. Bad breath
One of the most common oral issues, bad breath affects everyone at least once in their life. In fact, 85 per cent of people with persistent bad breath have a dental condition that is to blame. If you suffer from chronic bad breath, instead of covering it with mouthwash, make sure you visit your dentist first to rule out any more serious problems.

4. Tooth abscess
In severe cases of tooth decay, some people can get a tooth abscess. When a cavity is left untreated, the bacteria will eventually invade the pulp and infect the nerves and cells within the tooth. This can lead to inflammation and pus, which collects at the root of the tooth and forms an abscess. If you think you may have an abscess, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

5. Tooth sensitivity
Sensitive teeth are unfortunately extremely common and also often left untreated. However, it can be treated with the use of products like fluoride or a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. If you experience pain or discomfort from cold air, cold or hot drinks, ice cream, sweets or some other food or activity, you may have sensitive teeth.
