Difference between a Porcelain Veneer and a Porcelain Crown

Difference Between A Porcelain Veneer And A Porcelain rown

Cosmetic procedures are quite common these days, from breast implants and tummy tucks to fake tans and teeth whitening. Everyone wants to look their best and sometimes it can’t be done naturally. Cosmetic dentistry like porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns can help give chipped and worn teeth new life, taking years off your appearance and giving you confidence that glows from the inside out.

A porcelain veneer is a thin layer of restorative material – porcelain – that is placed over the front of the tooth. They can help rejuvenate the appearance of teeth to make them more aesthetically pleasing. They are strong but brittle and are used on teeth that are generally healthy and intact. Veneers are normally used for things like colour changes, create minor changes to the shape of a tooth and the procedure requires less or no trimming of the original tooth.

A porcelain crown on the other hand, is similar to a veneer except that it completely surrounds or caps a tooth or dental implant. Crowns can change the colour of a tooth like a veneer, but they can also significantly change the tooth’s shape and are often used to rebuild and strengthen problem teeth. They are very strong and durable, used as a permanent solution. Placing a crown requires a lot of tooth grinding and is a more drastic measure than veneers.

Both veneers and crowns can be used on any or all of the teeth in the mouth but are generally only used on the ones that can be seen while smiling as these are more obvious and often have more problems. Both methods help create a stunning and aesthetically pleasing smile and can help fix damaged teeth reducing discomfort. Although they are normally linked with cosmetic dentistry, both techniques do have health advantages as well.
