Information – Check-ups

A Dental Check-up typically involves seeing a Dentist to check the health of your mouth and a Dental Hygienist to clean your teeth and gums.

The benefits of a check-up is to detect the health of your teeth, gums and mouth and provide interceptive treatment before any major damage is done.

The benefits of a clean is to remove build-up of plaque, tartar and stains which would cause gum disease if left in situ.

The Procedure

The Check-up and Clean Appointment has two marked components:

The Check-up is performed by your Dentist and involves primarily the examination.  The Dentist may recommend certain tests and images such as Bitewing X-Rays to look in-between and underneath teeth and fillings for hidden problems.

The Clean is performed by your Dental Hygienist and involves removing deposits of plaque, tartar and staining.  Your Dental Hygienist will make record of gum health and also provide advice on teeth colour, and oral hygiene and diet which may unduly affect your teeth health.

The Cost

The cost of a Check-up and Clean is generally covered partially by your health fund. There will usually be a gap payment to make.

The Risks

Modern Dental Care in Australia is highly restricted. You receive quality care with high infection control standards. Digital radiography means significantly reduced exposure and better diagnosis.

The cost and time of routine checkup and cleans is far more economical than waiting for an emergency.

The Alternative

Infrequent and non-routine dental care often results in more extensive dental treatments when they are required.  Patients who have high risk, have had large treatments in the past are best recommended to have routine check-ups, it will save time and money in the long-run.
