Veneers, Crowns And Modern Materials

Porcelain Veneers and Porcelain Crowns are popular restorative solutions that enhance the overall appearance of smiles. They provide a natural and pleasing effect, without indicating that you’ve actually had some work done on your teeth. At Smile Artistry, cosmetic dentistry procedures involving porcelain crowns and veneers are executed using the latest dental ceramics in our onsite dental laboratory.

What’s the difference between veneers and crowns?

  Porcelain Veneers cover only the front surface of the tooth (the side presented when you smile), while crowns cover the entire tooth.

Porcelain veneers are thinner than crowns, coming in at one millimetre or less. Very little of the tooth surface is required to be removed to place veneers. As some of your original tooth enamel is reduced before cementing crowns, they are usually at least two millimetres in thickness.
 Crowns are strong and durable; veneers are a bit brittle, so some care must be taken to make them last for a long time (most well-maintained veneers last up to 16 years).

Porcelain crowns are usually used to strengthen decayed and broken teeth or to cover a large filling in a tooth. They are also recommended if the biting surfaces of your teeth have worn out as a result of frequent teeth grinding. Veneers are cemented on teeth that otherwise have a healthy underlying tooth structure. They work well in concealing dental imperfections and issues that are difficult to fix through other procedures. These include stubborn dental stains that cannot be lightened using teeth whitening procedures or cavities that are filled but still noticeable.

Common ceramics used for crowns and veneers

As the development of dental ceramics continues in full swing, dentists now have many options to create highly aesthetic, durable and functional veneers and crowns.

e.max Porcelain : An e.max metal-free crown is made from lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic known for its strength, durability and translucent colour. It imparts a natural and aesthetic look while also ensuring a long life.

Zirconia : Zirconia crowns use the toughest grade porcelain as a substructure. It is a popular choice among dentists as it lasts longer than other types of crowns and requires very little of the original tooth to be reduced, lowering the time needed to prepare the tooth for the procedure.

Depending on your case and expectations, we can suggest which material will work best.

How soon can you have porcelain veneers and crowns fitted?

Fitting porcelain veneers and crowns takes just two visits. This includes preparing the tooth for the crown/veneer, taking an impression of the tooth and fabricating a temporary on the first day, and removing the temporary, disinfecting the tooth and placing the veneer/crown to your tooth on the second visit.
